6th Year PhD Student, Computer Science

Brad Hayes is a PhD candidate and a member of the Social Robotics Laboratory in the Department of Computer Science at Yale University, advised by Professor Brian Scassellati. Brad is interested in building robotic systems that are capable of safe, complex collaboration with humans who may not have programming or robotics expertise. His work involves a combination of learning from demonstration, human teaming psychology, intention recognition and projection, and human-robot interaction.

Brad holds a Masters of Science and a Masters of Philosophy, both in Computer Science, from Yale University. He has received Bachelor’s degrees in Computer Science and Mathematics from Boston College and was the recipient of the Accenture award, given annually to the top graduating senior in Computer Science.

Research Interests

Brad is primarily interested in artificial intelligence and machine learning as it applies to human-robot teaming. His research involves developing algorithms that allow robot co-workers to be trained and influenced by natural input to improve the safety, efficiency, and quality of human work. His current focus is on applying social insights into hierarchical learning and planning systems to transition robots from mere assembly-line workers to functional, adaptable co-workers.

Personal

Brad is an avid ice hockey player and hobbyist acoustic guitar player. He founded the Yale Graduate Ice Hockey program and runs hockey clinics throughout the year in addition to captaining the Yale graduate school’s Connecticut Hockey League team. He is also interested in martial arts, having been a Capoeira instructor for 3 years. When he is not in the lab or on the ice, he can be found on the mats training in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.

Prior to joining the Social Robotics Lab, Brad worked for BAE Systems, Inc. Advanced Information Technologies in Burlington, MA.
