Lab research investigating whether dogs ascribe agency to social robots was featured in the magaizine IEEE Spectrum. The project, headed by Ph.D. candidate Meiying Qin and presented at the conference HRI ‘20, found that dogs are more likely to obey verbal sit commands issued from a robot than from a speaker. This finding suggests that dogs may perceive robots as social agents, which could have implications for the design of future social robots meant for the household.
